Philosophy & Qualifications

Let’s start at the beginning…

Once upon a time, I was a girl who filled notebooks with stories about cats.

Fast forward to the present day…

Lo and behold, despite well-meaning advice and against all odds, I kept writing.

Luckily for my readers, my subject matter has expanded.  While you will still find felines populating my creative works (which have been published worldwide), and in my books What Shines from It: Stories and XO, my writing is most often inspired by the beautiful cacophony of the world around me. Whether I’m writing about maps, dreams, romantic or platonic love, spirituality, bears, heartbreak, mythology or the cosmos, story is how I place myself in the mystery of existence.

But wait a minute…

Writing isn’t all romance and wonder. Writing is hard work. Writing requires discipline, knowledge, dedication, stubbornness, introspection, solitude, support and trust.

You know the power of the written word. You wouldn’t have shown up at my little corner of the internet if you didn’t. If you’re looking for a professional with close to twenty years of experience to edit your manuscript, suss out your grand ideas, and hold your feet to the fire, you’ve come to the right place.

Over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two…
  • I studied poetry and literature at The New School in New York City.
  • I spent six years in the Publicity and Editorial departments of a small trade book publisher.
  • I earned an MFA in Fiction from Pacific University (consistently rated one of the top 5 low-residency MFA programs in the nation).
  • I founded and edited a literary magazine, Cactus Heart, which ran for four years. We published 16 e-Issues and 6 print issues featuring emerging writers and accomplished authors from around the world.
  • I have reviewed books, as well as interviewed and profiled authors for a number of national magazines and outlets.
  • I am a past member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) and a current member of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP).
  • I’ve taught writing at Pioneer Valley Writers Workshop, Grub Street, and several other local conferences.
  • I’m a pro with the Chicago Manual of Style, the NYT Manual of Style, MLA formatting, Word Track Changes, Google Docs, and WordPress.
What it’s like to work with me…

I want to get familiar with your voice, as that’s what will carry your content. I ask a lot of questions and pose lots of ideas and grapple with your bigger picture intentions on the page. I’m interested in what you want to offer the world. For me, editing is a conversation. Throughout the editing process, we’ll have plenty of them. Together, we’ll make your book impactful, elegant, and ready for the world to read.
